Stem Cell⚡️
Well, Mikey is off to Monterey, Mexico for another round of stem cell therapy. Several friends have inquired about his medical treatments, specifically stem cells. So, if you are interested, the short answer is, it’s complicated. The high level stem cell therapy, for Mikey’s diagnosis (CP), is not offered in the US, nor is it covered by insurance. In the 80’s, embryonic stem cells were seen as a potential miracle cure in the U.S. but initial clinical trials had mixed results and some complications, so, politically the money spent was seen as a waste, and as a result, the current medical industry in the U.S. has mixed opinions on their use. While it is widely accepted to use stem cells that are extracted from the patient’s own cells in the US to treat sports injuries; currently, Duke University is the primary place in the U.S. for stem cell treatment for brain injuries. However, Duke is in the clinical trial stage, so getting approved is challenging and there are restrictions on what you can and cannot do (outside therapies) if you do get accepted into the trial, as they are focused on obtaining medical data.
Through seeing gains in the Brain Injury community, we felt comfortable going for it and taking Mikey to get Stem Cell. And while there is no clear way to prove correlations between specific treatments and results, the gains we’ve seen with Mikey have us planning to continue our semi-annual trips to Monterrey, Mexico for the foreseeable future.
